His early work explored surrealist imagery, using spontaneous mark‑making and dreamlike environments to investigate the subconscious. In the late 1990s, Barlow turned to painting from life with the belief that strengthening his observational skills would deepen the realism of his surrealist work.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eInstead, plein‑air painting became his primary artistic language. The challenges and logistics of working outdoors — shifting light, changing weather, and the need for immediacy — transformed his practice. Barlow discovered that painting directly from nature held its own kind of surrealism: an immersive, heightened awareness of place and time. Since 1998, he has focused almost exclusively on capturing the atmospheric light and everyday landscapes of Northern California, particularly the Siskiyou region and the Mt. Shasta area.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eHis work ranges from intimate 12×16 studies to larger 30×40 canvases, with 20×24 being his most consistent format. This view is from a turn out on Harry Cash Road in Big Springs, California. I painted this around 8 am over the course of four days, working about 2 hours each time. Legend has it that early settlers of the valley would lower their wagons and livestock down through the \"V\" in the rocks with ropes and a pulley system. This would save them days of travel time by avoiding traveling further southwest through treacherous lava rock outcrops and canyons. I tried to get the bright contrast of the morning light shining straight down on the landscape. This is looking east, so the sun had just come over the rocks and is directly above me creating a glare that was very difficult to work with.
