Chief Noah “Chief” Seattle was a chief of the Suquamish and Duwamish, two Coast Salish tribes. I encountered his story in a play and it stuck with me. Chief Seattle became famous for the speech he gave in January 1854 at a hearing before Isaac Ingalls Stevens, the governor of Washington Territory. The fact of the speech and its duration of about half an hour are documented by an article published 33 years later, in 1887, by Henry A. Smith in the Seattle Sunday Star newspaper, but there are no other sources. “Teach your children what we taught our children: The earth is our mother. What afflicts the earth afflicts the sons of the earth. When people spit on the earth, they spit on themselves. Whatever you do to the fabric of life, you do to yourselves.... “ There are four versions of this speech and in the end it doesn’t matter that it was probably never translated correctly. It helped found the environmental movement of the 70s and 80s. It is about the pain of knowing one’s own extinction and being powerless in the face of the conquerors. At the same time, it is the suffering of the female principle that appears in Botticelli’s Venus as naked truth, as an open and maltreated body. At the same time, Pandora must be rehabilitated in her myth of origin. It was only through patriarchal misogyny that she degenerated into a willing bearer of all evil. As the first woman, she was once a divine vessel full of glorious gifts.","brand":"Marina Schulze","offers":[{"title":"Default","offer_id":57444636983620,"sku":"0737710f-4967-4cf1-8824-925fc93b1f60","price":2028.0,"currency_code":"EUR","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0791\/3989\/7668\/files\/image_db220f7c-d8cc-4ebc-936f-f75b592b95a0.webp?v=1791719323","url":"https:\/\/www.picegallery.com\/pt\/products\/the-pandora-of-chief-seattle","provider":"Pice Gallery","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
