2004 Screenprint 42 × 30 cm The most difficult art is not adding. It is taking away. The great Italian artist said that the sculpture was already in the stone and he merely removed the excess. My art understands this too: it is the carved absence that creates visible presence. The groove is the gesture; the void is the language. Subtract invites the viewer into a similar exercise in themselves. In Vedanta philosophy, human suffering is an addition, not a lack. The overlay of ego, of the illusion of being separate, of fear accumulating layer upon layer until we forget what was there before. The Real does not need to be built. It needs to be discovered. And for that, one must take away. The shadow is not the enemy. It is the map of what we haven't yet seen. But when the light arrives — the light of perception, of devotion, of the instant of grace — the shadow doesn't fight. It simply goes. What remains when you subtract yourself? What always was.
