Santiago Harizaj

Santiago Harizaj was born in Vlorë, Albania, on July 27, 1992. After completing his secondary education in his homeland, he began dedicating himself to the art of photography, developing a particular sensitivity for portraying the human condition and emotions through images.

In 2010, he moved to Italy, where he continued to cultivate and deepen his artistic research. In 2014, he published the photographs Beyond Hope and Wisdom in OverArt Magazine, receiving the 2014 Critics’ Award. On that occasion, art critic Salvatore Russo wrote:

"Black-and-white photographs that bear witness to lived experiences. Men and women immortalized in collective memory. Stories of everyday life. Santiago is a photographer of international stature, capable of transcending the boundaries of space and time to reach a new dimension in which photography becomes his oldest confession."

Art critic Dino Marasà described him as:

"A photographer of life and humanity, Santiago Harizaj overcomes every possible difficulty by following the impulse of his feelings, the primary source of his creativity. Through the revelations of his framing and composition, he creates timeless spaces centered on the human figure."

In 2015, one of his photographs was selected as a cover image by the international photography platform YouPic, earning numerous awards and widespread appreciation. He also collaborated with the cultural magazine Kalon – Sicily Between Myth and Modernity, enriching its publications with distinctive and unique cover images.

An eclectic and versatile artist, he later expanded his creative research into painting and sculpture. In October 2019, one of his oil paintings on canvas was selected for a national artists’ exhibition at Palazzo Ferrajoli in Rome. In the same year, another painting was selected for the Milan Biennale, an exhibition featuring national and international artists presented by Vittorio Sgarbi.

Later, his oil painting Faith was exhibited at an international art exhibition in Miami, further strengthening his artistic presence on the international stage.

Writer Riccardo Di Salvo stated:

"There are photographers who do not see beyond the surface of things. Santiago does. He penetrates the soul."

Salvo Nugnes, organizer of international art events, wrote about Rage, the painting presented at the Milan Biennale:

"Santiago’s painting is powerful and immediate. It is impossible not to be fascinated by the directness of his mark-making and his ability to communicate emotion. The red tones, energetic strokes, and rapid, decisive brushwork define a face transformed by the expression of an overwhelming inner feeling. Whether it is a self-portrait or the interpretation of an impulse, the artist reaches the essence without mediation or embellishment."

Referring to Faith, exhibited in Miami, Nugnes observed:

"With Faith, Santiago Harizaj delivers a strong message denouncing the distorted consequences of a misunderstood and corrupted faith. A half-face with sharp features and a resentful gaze dominates the white canvas. The black line demonstrates confidence and communicative immediacy. The restrained palette allows the red tones to create a powerful sense of unease and tension, transforming the painting into an intense reflection on the relationship between faith, hatred, and suffering."

Today, Santiago Harizaj continues his artistic journey through photography, painting, and visual experimentation, developing a personal language in which gesture, emotion, and introspection merge into a continuous exploration of the human condition.
