Lavinia Marin
Born in Romania, the country of Vlad Dracul (Tepes Voda), as many might know it. However, Romania means much more than that. It signifies long oppressions and wars with the Ottoman Empire, King Ferdinand, Queen Mary, suffering and the communist regime, mountains, plains, the Danube, the Danube Delta, and the Black Sea. It encompasses ancestral customs preserved in certain places, faith, the Revolution of 1989, and, for her, a place blessed by God but trampled by humanity. Many have sought fulfillment in other countries, leading entire villages to be left without young people and children.
She was born in Bucharest, once known as "Little Paris," the first city in the world lit with kerosene. She lived for almost ten years during the communist era, under the dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu, who considered "having opinions," "expressing oneself freely," "being different," and "being rewarded for one's work" as crimes. During this time, electricity was cut off daily, forcing children to learn by candlelight. They were also obligated to praise a leader with four years of schooling who wanted to show Europe a Romania that ate rationally, where people and children had no access to what Western children had, except dreams.
She always wanted to paint and learn more about it, but her parents' financial means were limited, like most Romanians. Thus, she became a self-taught child who painted, danced, and dreamed but could not access specialized courses. Now, she is the parent of a talented boy with an extremely beautiful opera voice, whom she supports and encourages. She strives to pay for his courses so that he can develop his talent, giving him a chance much greater than she had.
Perhaps in her paintings, one can find expressions of optimism, as well as the sadness and discouragement of living in a time of limited possibilities. She loves to mix colors and spread them on canvas, conveying emotion to the viewer. She seeks to transmit the vibration of nature to those looking for reconnection and a bit of peace.
